 Primary health insurance

Subscribing to the student primary health insurance plan (Sécurité sociale étudiante) is mandatory when registering as a university student in France. This involves choosing a Student social security provider (LMDE or SMECO).

French students: Paid subscription for students 20 to 28 years old.
Foreign students from outside of the EEA: Paid subscription for students 20 to 28 years old.
Students from within the EEA and Quebec: No subscription required upon presentation of proof that you are covered by your home university/country.

NB: The need to subscribe to the student insurance plan can be waived for salaried students if they can prove, on the day they register, that they have a work contract for a ≥ 60-hour/month job for the entire school year.

 Supplemental health insurance

The French student health insurance plan (Sécurité sociale étudiante) is managed by 2 accredited student mutual associations – the LMDE and the SMECO. Each student is free to choose which of these he or she prefers to use as an insurance payer. You can also take out a supplemental insurance policy. Consult the LMDE and SMECO web sites for more information before registration.
